QUTE'99 Workshop
(Quality of Telecommunications Services)

21 October 1999
Venue: EURESCOM, Heidelberg, Germany

Abstract:
Quality of Service (QoS) has now been one of the "hot" topics of the Telecommunications world for some time. People in academia as well as in the EURESCOM Shareholders have spent time and effort to understand the issue, the technical challenges and some of the solutions. It is now time to start looking at the implementations of QoS in the production networks and to harvest the fruits of the efforts put in. This workshop will present the work performed in EURTESCOM Projects (on-going work as well as completed Projects) and will also present the work performed in EU-funded Projects and selected projects in Academia. In discussions the proposed solutions will be explained and evaluated.

Organisation:
In the collaborative research EURESCOM is already studying the QoS related issues in many Projects. Five of them will present their key results in this workshop showing the significant achievements.

First, we introduce the EQoS Framework, A framework that can be used to model all activities related to QoS. It sets the scene for the following presentations (and hopefully sheds some light over the confusion of terms in this area).
The workshop will first focus on User-oriented QoS, e.g. how users perceives differentiated QoS, proposals for a few QoS Classes and the tools and mechanisms existing to support QoS differentiation to the User.
The operator viewpoint will then be taken and mechanisms (hidden to users) providing Measurement, Management and Charging of differentiated QoS will be discussed.
Finally we will consider what we are going to study in our 2000 workprogramme.

Audience:
Presentations from EURESCOM Shareholders and other companies playing a significant role in the development of QoS will provide information to interested people including anyone working with planning or operational aspects of networks. Especially those who are considering the evolution of their network for the next generation of communications services.
